Algers informes "Charles Coffey Alger got rich in the production of iron at Stockbridge, Massachusetts and then Hudson, New York and he had a private contract with Geiger regarding the gun." Here it is "Birth: Jul. 4, 1809, USA Death: Jul. 13, 1874 New London New London County Connecticut, USA Charles Coffey Alger was the son of Levi (first husband) Alger and Grace Coffey of Southfields, (also known as Monroe), Orange County, New York. Charles Coffey Alger had two children from his first wife Sarah Palmer - Grace (never married) (born at Stockbridge, Mass. 1833-1834 and died 1899 at Pittsfield, Mass.) and Charles (born Feb. 22,1836 at Stockbridge and died Jan. 2, 1897 at Hudson, New York). Charles Alger,the son, married Helena Willett Freeland Jan. 4, 1866 at Greenport, Columbia County, New York and they had three daughters and one son. Helena died at Hudson Feb. 5, 1879 at age 32 of pneumonia and Charles never remarried. Sarah Palmer (born at White Plains, Westchester County, New York in 1809 or 1810 to William Palmer) and Charles Coffey Alger were married in Manhattan in Dec. of 1831 at a Methodist Church and divorced in the first half of 1868. Charles then married a much younger (by at least 30 years) Marie Louise Molt and had Lucile Alger in 1870 or 1871 at Norwich, Connecticut. Lucile and her mother inherited most of Charles's considerable estate. Lucile eventually settled in Great Neck, Long Island, New York around 1901. She soon had an architect build an estate house on a large amount of land and in 1910 the estate became known as the estate of Miss Alger and Miss Grace - Miss Grace being Louise Nathalie Grace, daughter of William Russell Grace a famous financier and two term mayor of New York City. Lucile died Christmas Eve in 1936 and left her wealth to Miss Grace. Miss Grace died in February of 1954. Charles Coffey Alger was in the pig iron business at Stockbridge, Mass. and later Hudson, N. Y. He had at least two patents on blast furnaces and designed the Hudson Iron Company blast furnace which has long since been demolished. He also had a part interest in the Lee-te iron deposits at West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Charles Coffey Alger and Sarah Palmer were my great, great grandparents. I believe that C. C. Alger was descended from the Algers of Lyme, Connecticut. I know that his parents were Levi Alger and Grace Coffey and that Charles grew up in Monroe, Orange County, New York. I believe that his grandparents on his father's side were Jonathan Alger, Jr. and Amy who lived in Dutchess County, New York and then upper Vermont and I know that his grandparents on his mother's side were John Coffey and his wife Experience ___ with a possible surname of Nye.
